Methodology

How to read the numbers

Income treatment varies. Stock indexes exclude dividends. The corporate-bond series includes coupon income, and cash compounds from reported T-bill yields.

Every line starts together. The selected markets are rebased to $10,000 at their first shared monthly observation.

“After inflation” uses U.S. CPI. It shows purchasing-power growth, not tax, fee, storage, or transaction effects.

Monthly data smooths the noise. Metals, market indexes, Bitcoin, and oil use monthly averages. Home prices use a monthly index.
