Import prices rose in August: what the index misses about tariffs

The September 16 import-price release adds another inflation signal. Separate border prices, tariff charges, currency effects, and final retail prices.

The reported import-price move

BLS’s September 16 report puts August import prices up 0.7% monthly, as higher nonfuel prices outweighed lower fuel prices. The release measures import-price changes; it is not a register of every retail markup. BLS import indexes exclude customs duties, making a direct comparison with a tariff-inclusive consumer bill particularly important to handle carefully.

Trace the layers of an actual purchase

The supplier invoice, currency conversion, applicable duty, shipping, insurance, distribution, and retail margin can each affect the final amount. A retailer holding older inventory may not immediately face the same costs as one ordering today. This article explains those layers without asserting a newly enacted tariff or an effective rate for a particular shipment.

An invented landed-cost calculation

Suppose an imported item has a $100 supplier value, an illustrative $10 duty, and $15 shipping. Its simplified landed cost is $125 before domestic distribution. If the supplier price becomes $105 and the assumed duty remains 10% of that value, the total becomes $130.50. The 4.4% increase differs from the supplier’s 5% change; real classifications and charges must be checked.

How to assess a retail headline

Ask which price was measured, whether duties are included, and which period the inventory reflects. Our tariff and inflation guide covers the underlying mechanism. Do not use one national monthly percentage to estimate a specific purchase without its actual cost breakdown. The next release can change the broader picture but cannot eliminate product-specific differences.
