The official status at publication

SSA’s COLA summary says the next adjustment will be announced in October 2026. This October 1 preview does not state an official 2027 percentage. Predictions from commentators can change as more data arrive, and the existence of an estimate does not mean SSA has adopted it. Check the linked agency page for any subsequent determination.

A benefit increase and a household budget differ

The program’s calculation uses its defined price measure and comparison periods. A household may spend differently on housing, food, transportation, and healthcare. A COLA can increase a gross benefit while particular essential costs rise faster. It also should not be confused with the net deposit after any applicable deductions or with a universal return on retirement savings.

Use scenarios before the announcement

For an invented $2,000 monthly gross benefit, hypothetical increases of 2%, 3%, and 4% produce $2,040, $2,060, and $2,080. These are scenarios, not forecasts or official awards. If an assumed monthly expense also rises by $50, subtract that change separately. Avoid spending a projected increase before its amount and timing are confirmed.

What to verify once SSA publishes

Check the official percentage, effective benefit period, and your own notice. Compare gross and net amounts consistently. Our retirement inflation guide helps connect income and expenses. This preview should be read with its date: an official announcement later in October will supersede its statement about what was still unknown on October 1.
